Wake up your Mac

Using the current versions of IRTrans USB modules and with all LAN modules, it is possible to wake up your Mac from sleep. To achieve this you may store an arbitrary IR code into the module which will act as a wake-up-call.

Store Wakeup code

If your IR module is capable of wakeing up your Mac (see below) please:

  1. Open up the Inspector window
  2. Select one IR code from your archive. It must not be a raw code or an multi code, though.
  3. Choose Set as Wakeup code from menu Actions

If this menu can't be selected, your module may not have been configured correctly. If you have more than one module connected to your Mac, please first remove all modules except of one before setting the wakeup code.

Check Wakeup code

Send your Mac to sleep using Infrared

Please create a new AppleScript action, reading that simple:

tell application "System Events" to sleep

If you bind this action to a trigger - probably the same code as used above - you may send your Mac to sleep and wake it up using your remote.

Which modules do support Wakeup?

This very much depends on hardware (HW) and firmware (FW) version of the IRTrans module.

The hardware version number is to be found on the bottom of the module itself. It reads like USB V3.5 e.g. The firmware version can be retrieved from the Preferences panel, section IR Modules. It looks like U5.03.01 for a USB module.

Some modules have to be sent to IRTrans.de for upgrading - upgrade is free, only shipping costs apply.

This table shows the different versions:

Hardware Version Supports Wakeup? Power Supply for Wakeup?
USB before V3.3 nein -
USB V3.3 - V3.4 yes, after hardware upgrade (1) External
USB V3.5 yes, after firmware update (2) External
USB since V3.6 yes (see following chapter) Depends on Mac (3)
LAN since V1.2 yes External obligatory

1) Please contact marcus@irtrans.com for details
2) The firmware update can be done from a PC
3) Successfully tested with Mac mini (PPC and Intel), PowerBook, Cube G4 and with "powered" USB hubs

Configuration of USB hardware

If you have an IRTrans V3.6 or later and don't want to use an extra power supply, you may configure the IRTrans to use its power for wake-up from the sleeping USB port. This has to be enabled by moving a jumper on the IRTrans logic board. Please see this foto for the correct location of the blue jumper after movement:

Settings for IRTrans Ethernet module

All Ethernet modules are capable of waking up the Mac. First you need to enable the Mac:

Now you need the Ethernet ID of your Mac:

This ID has to be set as "WakeOnLAN Mac Address" at the Ethernet module configuration. Please see the respective IRTrans manual.
